Osteopathy FAQs
What should I expect during a consultation with an osteopath?
At your first appointment, the initial part of the session will be spent discussing your symptoms and past/present medical history. You will then be asked to undress to your underwear so that you can be examined.
The examination involves the patient performing a few simple movements to assess mobility and restrictions, some orthopaedic/ neurological tests and palpation (a highly developed sense of touch).
Once this has been completed, I will fully explain your diagnosis and a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.
What happens during treatment?
Treatment involves a variety of manual techniques including mobilisation and/ or manipulation of joints, various stretching techniques and soft tissue massage to ease pain, reduce swelling and improve joint mobility.
Usually exercises and advice are given specific to your condition in order to hasten recovery and help prevent recurrence.
How many treatments will I need?
This varies widely between patients as it depends on many factors such as how long they have had the problem, age, lifestyle and overall health. However, most patients usually feel some relief after one to two treatments and total relief within a few weeks.
For patients who have experienced serious injuries or have complex health problems, the benefits of treatment are more gradual. Some conditions can be permanently helped while others such as arthritis require maintenance treatments in order to keep symptoms at bay.
